It is not every day you discover a hacienda style boutique hotel that took design inspiration from the Alhambra palace.

La Esperanza Granada is an authentic take on the traditional hacienda, where every corner and experience has been crafted meticulously. After boldly coming to life following a vibrant renovation during the pandemic, this independently owned gem has just opened its doors. It is fast becoming Spain’s most coveted escape.

The Spanish Mission style villa, with a courtyard inspired by the Alhambra, lies amidst 4.5 hectares of flower gardens and organic fruit trees overlooking the beautiful Lecrin Valley. Only 35 minutes from Granada and 90 minutes from Malaga by car, it close to the buzz whilst capturing complete tranquility.

Those who visit the magical home are given a taste of the traditional Andalucia lifestyle and design. Paying homage to its heritage and neighbours, this magnificent project is a true labour of love. Handpainted frescoes by a trompe l’oeil artist adorn the doorways and windows whilst all the antiques and artworks were discovered with the assistance of some of the finest purveyors in Andalucia.

It is the personal touch, that is evident from the warm welcome and privately owned art and furniture collection, that makes the experience particularly special. The hotel’s owner Christine Cunanan lives between Tokyo and Granada. The editor-in-chief of Travelife Magazine, a leading Southeast Asia publication, Christine decided to fuel her passion for travel, art, food, and interior design to embark on her very own hotel project.

"I acquired La Esperanza Granada at the height of the pandemic," she says. "We undertook major renovations and now we are proud to offer guests an authentic Spanish hacienda experience. They will feel as if they have been invited to stay in a much-loved house with every possible comfort provided. I hope our magical villa will become their happy place — one associated with wonderful memories."

A member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, the main house comprises two special suites and a selection of guest rooms. The jewel in the crown is the grand suite La Feliz, with views of the Sierra Nevada mountains from its two terraces.

There is a walk-in dressing room and spa bathroom. Double doors open onto a Juliet balcony overlooking a walled garden with frescoes. You’ll find a tennis court, swimming pool and heliport on site too.

The gastronomical experience is lead by Andalucia's much praised cook Maria Pimiento. As the villa's private chef, she oversees all fine dining experiences which can be booked for intimate lunches and suppers (price on request). Maria also curates the daily Spanish continental breakfast, included on a complimentary basis for all guests, with organic ingredients from the gardens of La Esperanza making fresh juices, fruit plates and pastries.
